Experience

Drenthe is one big, rugged outdoor playground. Nowhere else in the Netherlands will you find such a variety of nature. Endless forests, extensive heathlands, winding rivers, and typical Drenthe villages called es- and brinkdorpen. The term "esdorp" is associated with the 'es,' a collective arrangement of elongated fields situated just beyond the village. The term 'brink' designates a field located at the town's periphery, historically serving as the gathering spot for farmers to assemble their cattle in the morning. Experience outdoor life like you've never done before.

Boscamping Zwanemeer is a forest campsite. And as the name suggests: we are located in a wooded area. This means you hear all the sounds of nature close around you. In short: you will be right in the middle of nature with an authentic atmosphere!

Iron age barrows

Barrows? Yes, indeed! You'll find them in the forest near the campsite. In the ice age, it was a barren, cold place in Drenthe. Plants and animals could hardly survive here, but when the ice melted, reindeer and woolly rhinoceroses migrated here. Ancestors hunted these reindeer. Later, the hunters started growing plants and became farmers. A deceased farmer was cremated and buried under the sand. That's how the Iron Age barrows in the Zwanemeer forest originated. The largest barrow is called the Rabbit Hill.

Zwaanmeerveld

On old topographic maps from around 1900, this area is called the Zwaanmeerveld, literally translated Swan Lake Field. In the far north of the forest area lies a lake called Zwanemeer, a water pond that formed after sand extraction in the area. The lake is low-lying between fairly steep, wooded shores. The forest area is located on an elongated sand ridge called the Hondsrug, on the edge of the Hunze valley.

Authentic

Feel one with the forest and nature. Boscamping Zwanemeer is a place where you enjoy the rising or setting sun and a beautiful starry sky. Here, it's truly dark at night! Children are called 'woodland detectives' here. Kids can climb and scramble in the forest and learn all about nature at the Woodlanders Club. Very important: getting dirty is allowed!

Sustainable

We are aware of nature and the environment. And we take good care of it, together. Respect for our living environment is very important to us.

Adventure

Stories around the campfire with marshmallows. Spontaneous music by the campfire. And frolicking in the primeval forest. Be careful not to get lost! Here, you experience adventures. Powerful and unpolished. We warmly invite you to experience our rugged campsite.
